In a down year for CFB

How do you come to this conclusion?

Pretty easily. The top teams this year are not separated much from the field. This is the most tightly packed group at the top in the playoff era. In years past there have been an average points spread of 12 for semi final matchups, this year it's a combined 6 points for a 3 point average. There have been dominant teams in years past and this year it seems like most anyone is beatable, which has generally proven true.

The portal allows teams to shore up high school recruit misses and injuries. More free agency and more parity is likely.
