SMU has at best the sixth largest fanbase in Texas. Look at their Mickey Mouse stadium. They will never be able to recruit toe-to-toe with Texas, A&M or even OU in Texas. The Mustang's best hope is get cast offs from those schools via the portal. They have a long way to go before becoming a legitimate threat to FSU and Clemson.

Saying they will pull top 20 talent is not saying they will compete with those schools.
Those schools pull top 10 talent.
TCU is pulling top 20 talent right now and is going to be in weaker conference because they don't have Texas and Oklahoma to prop it up.
Until the ACC collapses Clemson and Florida State will prop up the conference and it'll be held in higher regard than the new Big 12.
