You might be right, but I'm not sure. If your local hardware stores closes and another opens, sure, you go to the new one. But social media sites have a weird amount of buy in, and Twitter might be the acme of that. People don't like the feeling of having to "rebuild" the clout and following they already have, and that's especially true for older people. And assuming this copy and paste works, Twitter definitely trends older for social media:

Age Group --- Share of Users
13-17 --- 6.6%
18-24 --- 17.1%
25-34 --- 38.5%
35-49 --- 20.7%
Over 50 --- 17.1%

Do I think all of Twitter's users would just stop interacting with social media the way they do with Twitter? No, I don't think so. But would a solid third just... stop? Yeah, maybe. Twitter is a bit of strange holdover from the early days of the mass market internet. Same with Facebook. If FB died tomorrow, I highly doubt even half of its current userbase would migrate over to whatever new service takes its place. I know I wouldn't. Using it is more habit than anything else at this point.
