There are some good docs about Dallas at that time and they don’t paint the best picture.

There was a full page ad in the paper (which had a notable right lean back then) telling Kennedy he wasn’t welcome and listing the grievances. Dallas in particular had a large number of organized nutjobs compared to the rest of the country.

Oswald was at least heavily influenced by that environment, and at worst… there are a ton of theories as we know.

There were shenanigans going on in the south, for sure. Carlos Marcelo ran the mob in Louisiana. In Shreveport, George D'Artois, he ran the mob activities as the public safety commissioner, and his name came up in the investigation. He was also indicted for the murder of Jim Leslie, but died before he could face trial.

Those days were (D)different, for sure, but the criminals have just gone more underground, and less obvious.

It’s good that we can trust our media now to not incite boundless fear and aggression.
