I think the deal is that to deal with the VA (any government agency), you need to be patient, organized and keep/maintain personal records. I know several guys who need help, but give up due to the bureaucracy.

I don't think officers are treated any differently by the VA, they just remain focused, engaged, get/present the needed info in a organized manner and follow up without getting upset.

I encourage guys to keep up on and don't give up. It will likely take years and many appeals to get benefits, but just keep after it.
