I like Al Pacino and Brian DePalma but I've never liked Oliver Stone either as a screenwriter or director. Outside of some catchy dialogue, I thought the script for the movie was terrible. Pacino and DePalma try their best to elevate the script but it just wasn't a very good movie.

I'm so damn old I saw it in the theatre in Mandeville upon release in 1983. Some Saints players were in there hiding their eyes at the chainsaw scene.

It's OK to enjoy it, even if you think it's not great. I bet F. Murray Abraham doesn't have Scarface on his resume. Doubt he got many calls after making it. I imagine he got a lot of work after Amadeus, which came out the next year. Abraham is good in period pieces, but he's great as an arsehole, in any time period. He was perfect as the teacher in Finding Forrester.
Carlito's Way is more of the same, except you get Sean Penn's great performance as the last person on earth anyone would want to be friends with.
