That’s because Boomers and Gen Xers were taught that 15% was the norm. 18% became the norm when sales tax became 9% and it was easier to double the tax rather than calculate 15% in your head.

With these dumb arse machines that you have to pay with the server standing at the table the % will continue to creep up. So servers will get a raise from inflation plus a higher %.

Gen Xer here, I’ve always known it to be at least 20%.

I don’t know anyone in my age group who tips less than this amount unless shitty service.
