Assuming it's motherfricking tiger mosquitos, it's because they are damned near indestructible. They can survive in temps below freezing and can breed in running water. Miserable little fricks: LINK

Some of the worst mosquitos I've seen were in Minnesota. It gets cold as hell there, but there are lakes and ponds everywhere. The warm weather months up there might be worse than Louisiana when it comes to Mosquitos.
They were pretty bad in Illinois but nothing like Minnesota. Wonder if it's the same breed.
