Police released a fact sheet on the shooter. They said he is a firearms instructor, Army reservist, and had a mental health history. Said he threatened to shoot up a National Guard base and got committed to mental hospital for two weeks earlier this year. (I assume he got committed after the threats). He was released only this summer, so he hasn't been out all that long.

I would argue they do exclude a military career because a civilian conviction like that will lead to an administrative board at the minimum and a discharge will result. Hard to imagine he didn't have civilian trial, some sort of time in prison and so forth. I can't imagine the military would be in the dark about all of that, and that they would ignore it once they found out.
