Philsophically, I like that Crane doesn't want to sign mega deals that look bad a year or two into them.

Realistically, it's not a sure thing he's going to be able to keep doing that. At a certain point, he's going to have to start keeping some of in-house guys with expiring contracts or dip into free agency.

Either way, the days of signing premier talent with 4- or 5-year deals are probably gone. He's probably going to have to bend on that stance if the Astros are going to remain a contender on a regular basis.

The bigger problem is we don’t have 23-25 year old worth doing that in my opinion. I still want no part of a 10 year deal for a 31 year old. Tucker is the closest to that. Don’t want to be a prisoner of the moment in one bad postseason but I dunno, and he’s a corner OF. Not at a premium position value wise

All things considered, I'm starting to do a flip flop on the idea of trading Bregman. I'd say trade him, collect the prospects since he's going to leave anyway and sign Matt Chapman to a 5 year deal for no more than 150.

Restocks the farm and covers the 3rd base hole on the type of contract Crane will tolerate. Not much changes if you swap in Chapman's salary for Bregman this year
