How to get grass to grow?

The summer sun and heat did a number on my front and back lawn. What can I do to get this ugly yard back to looking green again?

It’s a smaller yard so you should probably start over. With either sod or seed.
If you wanted, you can seed about 10 lbs of Perennial Rye per 1000/sq ft and have a great dark green lawn in 4-6 weeks.
Then kill the Rye around March and start working on a Bermuda sprigging project.
That’s what I would do anyway.

Yep, $60 bag of ryegrass seed and you can have nice green grass November-April. Pro tip, hold back about 1/4 of the seed so you can put it down in a few weeks after you see where your thin spots are. Even if you spread the seed perfectly some of it will move around when you water/get rain.

Buy an attachable sprinkler for next time. You’ll cover that area no problem.
As mentioned above, the short term solution would by the perennial grass seed so that you have something and then you can reseed in spring.

Here’s your plan for Perennial Rye:
1. Scalp all that to the dirt first
2. Scratch up the ground a bit with a rake
3. Sow the seed pretty heavy 10-12 lbs/k. Yes, hold some back to patch up in 10-14 days
4. Cover the seed with a very thin layer of peat moss or compost
5. Water for 5 minutes every 3-4 hours for 7 days (or as often as possible if you don’t buy a timer)
6. Put down a starter fertilizer 14 days after sowing.
7. Cut consistently after 2-3 weeks at 1.5 to 2.5 inches with a sharp blade.
$100-200 all in

I would start by giving it adequate water and see what happens. Get whatever grass is still there as healthy as you can get it before winter. I believe you will be suprised how much will sprout and green back up within the next month.
