There are a few others who have taken over his role though

I updated my DVD inventory this morning. 1,711.

Holy smokes man. I know you have streaming services as well, if a movie you want to watch is streaming and you have it on DVD, which do you watch? My post wasn't to knock anyone collecting DVDs btw. My point has always been at this point with so much streaming options, I think it's a better move to spend $15 on Netflix and have 1,000s of shows and movies instead of $15 on one new DVD, or 3, or however many DVDs $15 will get you.

Very true.

The vast majority of my collection came before streaming got big. I don't buy DVDs too much anymore (but I still will occasionally for certain movies that I just want in my collection), but it used to be a weekly thing for me more or less. If it is available to stream, I'll generally watch it that way. But there have been lots of times where it wasn't available to stream (or not for free) and I'll just pull out the DVD and watch it.

shite, I bought The Wizard (1989) a couple weeks ago because it wasn't available for free to stream. So I picked it up for like 6 bucks (shipping included) as opposed to paying around $4 to rent it for a couple of days, and now my four year old loves it and wants to watch it every day.

And I get your point about having "1,000s of shows and movies" on streamers. But how many of those thousands do you actually consume? I'd bet it's a VERY low number. So your focus is actually pretty pointed when it comes to things you actually want to watch. And for the most part I'd rather own those things than have them taken away at any given time due to infighting between the entertainment industry. Not to mention with as many streaming services that are offered now, I wouldn't be surprised if the cable format came back into play, only with streaming services (and you already are seeing that with bundles).

ETA: In that OML thread linked on the previous page, my collection stood at 1,679. And that was late September of 2021. So I've bought about 30-ish movies in the last two years. In the past I would've gotten 30 in a fraction of that time.
