Nothing is 100% against a grizzly except a perfectly placed shot to the dome. If you have the ability and skill to pull that off, that should definitely be your first option. That said, it's an odds game. The casual shooter or a non-shooter has a much better chance with bear spray.

I've spent a fair amount of time backpacking in grizzly country. I've read books about bears and bear attacks and talked to alot of people about them, both in Alaska and up around Yellowstone. However, I've never had an up close encounter with a grizzly, so take my two cents for what it's worth.
