If you want a combo grill/smoker I would say Kamado or Oklahoma Joe.
I have the Primo Kamado. It's made in the US and it is an oval so you can get a brisket on there easier. I believe they are the only ones that make an oval and the extra grill space is nice.
The only downside to charcoal is the time to get things started and to temp if grilling. But the flavor is great and it does a good job with smoking as well. You just have to sneak up on the temp or get an automated temp controller.
So with a Kamado, you are over $1000 to $1500 with stands. It just depends on the budget and the space. For a charcoal combo grill smoker, it is hard to go wrong with a Kamado type.
