I think this is partially (obviously there are just shitty people in the world anywhere) a result of the airlines continuing to more and more treat passengers like cattle. The planes and seats continue to get smaller, they jam more and more people into a plane, there are less and less of any kind of perk, amenity or even a smiling face, all while the fares continue to skyrocket. The airline doesn't give a shite about the passenger anymore as long as they pay up. They treat everyone like cattle, as a result, you get people that act like cattle.

I wish they would take away the drink service. I’m not a fan of the stewardesses banging around the aisle so some fatty can have a couple sips of Diet Coke.
