I was in San Francisco a few months ago and it didn't seem all that bad. From all of the stories that I've read I expected the whole city to be a huge shite hole. I didn't really see that though.

I was there in July, and there are signs EVERYWHERE telling you not to leave anything in your vehicle.
Down by the piers, we only parked in a lot run by the longshoremen's union that had a pretty sharp, don't frick with me or you'll disappear union guy watching the lot. Other places, we parked as close as we could get to where we were going and didn't venture far. Again, paid extra for lots with security. Do not park on the street. They somehow know whose car doesn't belong.
