Long story short, my father who split from my mom and never really contacted me growing up passed away from Pancreatic last weekend. I was contacted by a buddy of his whom my dad asked to contact me after he passed. My dad apparently didn't have a will but I was his only child and he never married.

Have to drive over from Houston to Destin. So thinking about getting everything in order before hand. Plan to call the local courthouse and possibly a probate lawyer if necessary.

Any rec's from the MT dealing with probate? Only 34 and never really thought about this topic ever.

Sorry about your Dad. I'm a probate lawyer here in FL. Happy to chat if you want some free advice. Just drop a throwaway email

Florida is basically God’s waiting room. You think they’d have the simplest probate in the country.

The easiest probate award goes to New Jersey.

It seems like one of the hardest parts in that scenario would be identifying his assets and debts. Imagine walking into a stranger's home and trying to sort that out, especially given how most financial matters are now online and often don't leave a good paper trail in a file cabinet.

With luck, and since he knew it was coming, he left a decent list or told the buddy what was what.
