Box jumps on unpadded boxes are not the best idea for bigger dudes.

I watched people deadlift and squat with horrible form because they were going for the extra rep, or for time. I always did shite right because I know how much difference 1/2 of bar movement in the wrong direction can make.

Yes, there are plenty of idiots that do crossfit as there are in any other exercise regimen. Those are usually the guys who just go to open gym so there is no one there to correct them. However, any quality crossfit-type gym will have quality coaches who will instruct the members in movement standards and how to scale weight, reps and range of motion. It's a whole different thing than it was 10 years ago.
