Seems strange. No independent confirmation as yet. The inference is it was not unexpected but there's been no indication that he was ill prior to this. It would be the GOAT hack to take over all his social media accounts at once but anything's possible.

He canceled a show earlier this year due to a hospitalization. Can’t find any details other than that.

He had a concert planned here in the Charleston area several months ago.
As all of his shows do, it sold out in just a couple of minutes. I missed out on tickets.
Show wound up cancelled, he announced he would reschedule. He’d been hospitalized, I believe in Boston, with an urgent medical condition. Reading that statement put out, gives me the impression he had cancer.
He saw several of his shows, all were great. He spent a lot of time over the years in Charleston, hanging out incognito. Ran into him one night 30+ years ago, I’d walked into a little bar called Cumberlands, the band playing took a break so he grabbed a guitar and just had some fun with probably no more than 20 customers.
Fair winds and following seas….it’s five o’clock somewhere…at one particular harbor…

Not the Buff!!!!!! A truly sad day for the music world and for the legions of fans that followed him and attend his concerts.
What a profound loss. A true entertainer.
