Advice on Airline Prices

I started looking back in July for a trip in December. Flights I wanted were around $430 each. Reading online they said prices were generally cheaper 3-4 months before departure date so I didn't pull the trigger. A month later and they're $800. Did I mess up by not booking in July? Should I keep waiting?
Maybe I'm just trying to get flights that are in high demand. Short layover, not leaving at the arse crack of dawn, etc.
TIA

if the travel is in the second half of December, I doubt it goes cheaper. I rarely see deals or price drops for your normal holiday travel time. I may be wrong, but that has been my personal experience and observations.

To where def matters...
But yes, if you are a SW person or get emails from other airlines you'll see them promoting big Fall and Winter sales right now that you can save a great deal of money on.
Look into buying points too at discounted rates that you can use towards those flights.
Saved about $150 per ticket in April by working the system

Here’s my tip. I’ve pretty much flown 1,000,000 miles just with AA. (Not including other airlines)
Yes, it’s better to book in advance. Also change the day you’re leaving or departing.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays are usually cheaper.
However, if you really want to shop around, change airports.
You’d be surprised how much cheaper MSY can be than BTR, but sometimes vice versa.
I always check BTR, MSY, Houston, Gulfport, Laffy before I make a final decision if I’m trying to save some money.

found some direct flights from NO instead of BR for $100 cheaper than what I was looking at in July. 30 min more driving to cut 2 hours off the flight. southwest instead of delta

I booked flights for December from NO to Orlando directly through Southwest website for $300 each roundtrip. I believe I booked them in late June if I remember right.

just paid $380. guess I should have booked in June . think you can easily rebook later if prices go down though

Not if you book somewhere other than the airline. Just found that out

Don't use OTAs for hotels either.

Booked through Chase Travel, and have always been able to change my flight through the airline if I wanted to. But my previous flights must’ve changed departure times or something, because neither the airline or Chase would budge this most recent time.

We're forced to use Chase to redeem points, but even Chase (maybe the least shitty of the OTAs) will do things like have you fly SkyTeam to New York, then switch to Star Alliance to get to Europe, that novices that won't understand the risk involved.
My last trip to the EU was booked through United, on LH metal. I look at United.com, I see my two return flights. I log into LH, and I'm booked on three different flights on the return, through both Munich and FRA. Imagine that shitshow booking through an OTA.
