Its the new freon R1234YF in these newer vehicles. They aren't built right for the refrigerant

The compressor is engaging and works fine and I tried a new relay switch but still blowing hot air. I dropped the car off at the mechanic and see what he says tomorrow. My wife is a EBR school teacher so it works out that she is off tomorrow and I don’t have to take her to work.

Works when driving but not idling at a stoplight? That’s usually a fan problem
Works when idling most the time. Drove from our house to my in-laws in Donaldsonville today. Started blowing hot air on the interstate past Highland and kicked back on once we got off the interstate. On the way back started blowing hot air at the Gonzales exit and started back around Bluebonnet.
It uses R-134a.
Read on a forum that it might be freezing up. I still need to do some more research.

It’s possible for a system to be over charged. See what your freon levels are at

I might have to hook her up with the window unit!
Seriously, I don’t know how people are making it without ac in the car driving around in this heat. I tried putting freon in her car but just warm air coming out so I’m not looking forward to the repair cost.
I am interested to know what it ends up being. We are going through the same thing ATM.
Try turning the AC off completely. Turn the car off. Then start the car without the AC on and then turn the AC on.
Likely won't matter in the end, but this worked a couple of times for us. It's blowing hot again now though.

Perhaps you already answered, but what kind of car is it?

I’ve seen videos on YouTube of mechanics who are quitting because the newer cars are harder to work on and not made well like past vehicles.

But I hope I didn't overcharge it and make it worse. I charged it to 50 psi yesterday. Is ambient temp for the pressure chart the exterior temp or cabin temp?

Thanks! Sorry, I missed you saying that on the first page of the thread.
Very interested to see what yours ends up being. We will probably try to get ours fixed this week as well.

I will definitely let you know what the mechanic says tomorrow. Good luck getting yours fixed too!

Maybe the OT can help here too. Wife's car, 2018 Forester. A/C cuts in and out while driving. Will be good for for 20 minutes of driving then cut out. Eventually it will kick back on.
Recharged the refrigerant yesterday. Still doing it today. Switch? Compressor Clutch? Or the whole damn thing?
Does it blow more air the faster it goes? Its likely the fans blowing. It might be the whole damn thing.

Roll down the Windows and hit the gas. That is the low tech solution.

One time I thought all hope was lost and it was the compressor relay.
Posted on 8/20/23 at 10:48 pm to Byrdybyrd05
Probably just needs servicing and is low in freon, has enough that it’s not tripping the low pressure switch but not enough to run the system. Didn’t it just stop all at once or did it happen over time. Maybe a blend motor but they normally get stuck in what ever position they are in last.

The first time happened back in April because the ac compressor went out. I bought a compressor and replaced the condenser and it was blowing ice cold until late July it was blowing cool. I didn’t know about that because my wife never said anything to me about it. Now, it’s just warm air and she just told me about it Friday night.
