SMU was the “U” before the U and should’ve won a natty or two with all the talent they had in the early 80s.
By the time they got the death penalty they were actually fading a bit and getting outbid by OU and aggie.

But it was a fun ride especially with the Pony Express. McIlheney had a lot of talent around him obviously but was a perfectionist running the option.

Had Ron Meyer stayed at SMU to at least 1984 they likely would have won one natty maybe two. That's what set off alarm bells with him leaving after 1981 season the 1982 team was absolutely loaded with almost everyone coming back.
