So much controversy in this thread when it comes to interpretation and different faiths. I'm not a religion scholar but have studied a lot about the catholic church. I was born, baptized, confirmed, married Catholic, etc.. I now attend a non-denominational.
As I understand it, a priest grants forgiveness on behalf on the congregation, not for God. You've also sinned against man (the congregation). This was told to me at Cursillo. Take it like you want.
I certainly don't agree with some of the actions of the Catholic church in earlier centuries but I feel those actions were because of their beliefs. Just like we have different beliefs in this thread.
I think the important thing to remember is that despite what church you go to or what religion you practice, try to keep an open mind, use the brain that God gave you, and try to be a good person.. Have compassion, tolerance, faith and forgiveness. Don't be an a-hole.
