quote:Maybe for a couple seasons, but what happens once Oregon or Penn State ends up 6th every year? Lest we forget, Nebraska was once a giant in CFB. They can't compete in the Big 10, and now that they're not winning, they can't recruit either. We're talking about an alltime great, that would probably lose to half the Sun Belt teams.
Truth is no one give a damn about Oregon st vs Washington game. But if Ohio State was playing Oregon, or USC was playing Penn St people would tune in. Not even talking about casual college football fans here either.
That's going to happen to some more teams soon.
And in the meantime, some of those who get left out will band together, someone will emerge from that pack as "champ", and start building traction to get into the playoffs.

Saw an interesting post about how college football is headed towards being like NASCAR where greed and pissing off their core fans ended up destroying the popularity of the sport. It was not that long ago when the Daytona 500 got better ratings than the NBA Finals and not just by a little but by a lot. That would be unthinkable today because of how much NASCAR has fallen.

Are you suggesting that if Oregon or Penn State starts going 7-5 or 6-6, they will take an 85 million dollar a year pay cut for the AAC or MAC????? I mean come on...those massive brands arent going anywhere, even if they slip. On the other hand, even if Washington St or Oregon St were to have a stellar year and go 12-0 or 11-1 or even 10-2...those schools aren't drawing the ratings needed to justify their payouts. It's absolutely anti-capitalist to think the media networks should HAVE to bleed out and lose money propping up Washington St and Oregon St just so the PAC can survive as a conference. ANY business in our country cuts dead weight from their business model...and the REALITY is that there is a LOT of dead weight. Next up...looking at you ACC and Wake Forest, BC and Syracuse....
