I would rather a team full of players like Hester that are "coachable" and are hardnose, bust you in the mouth, play 4 quarters type players than a Johnny 5 star, that is media built, knows the position better than the coach, that plays a finesse type of ball, that plays with a "I" mentality. So everyone that cries cause Johnny 5 star doesn't come to LSU knows nothing about what it takes to be a true football player, because you never played the game in the first place. Also you can have the best ingredients in the world, but if the Head Coach can't prepare the meal, or some of the ingredients doesn't taste good together, what the use in having them?

because fans can't really evaluate talent, so the stars are the best thing they've got.

Because there is no other real way for fans to know who is good or not besides the stars and watching the videos, and the videos of the 5 stars are usually much better than those from others.

And there is definitely no way to know about their character, so that is all we got.

People bitch and complain, but I think we all trust the coaching staff because we all realize we are just fans, and they are football coaches.

I love the star rating system..

With ESPN entering the scene it will take things up a notch in competition..

Top 10 recruiting classed equal top 10 finishes, usually..

Except for ND! Weiss has a 15 million dollar bailout, I mean buyout

It is important to have guys like Hester in the mix but those big time 4 and 5 star guys are important. Do they always work out... no.

Does a guy like a Julio Jones, Peterson, Tebow, Harvin, etc make a massive impact... yes.

5 stars are going to be impact players more often than 2 star guys. That doesn't mean that a 2 star can't be an all american in college.

Because the star rankings are empirically validated.

Highly ranked classes + decent coaching = wins on the field.

top 5 classes annually = top 5 finishes annually

look at the recruiting leaders the last few years minus notre dame. shite matters. sure there are people like Hester who are team/role players and leaders, but we teams need a good combination of both.

Because our society is based on winners and losers. 5* is a winner, a 2* is a loser.

why are men in love with perfect 10 models, when there are coachable 6's and 7's out there.

It is better to have a class of 5 stars with a bust or two, than to have class of 2 stars with an AA or two.

Because those attributes are NOT mutually exclusive.

You CAN be tough as hell and be a 5* OR you can be the biggest prima-donna on the planet and be a 2*

Why can't a 5* guy be talented and coachable/a good teammate?

because they like winning

There is a pretty direct correlation between the schools that consistantly recruit well and those that win a lot of games of a year to year basis

This is where coaching matters. Nick Saban, Les Miles, Urban Meyer, Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier, Houston Nutt, Mark Richt, Butch Davis, Bob Stoops, Pete Carrol...Give any of these guys ND's current talent, along with the recruiting base and tradition of the school, ND is a top 5 power immediately. Charlie Weiss is the most overrated coach ever. He was given a ridiculous contract b/c he almost beat USC in '05.
