Now remember this is in the days of Ironman football and a team only plays 12-13 players a game max.

hehe
"Doc" wait to you see the play of the year in 1908 football.
I told Bud about it and he told Pete Finney, but Pete didn't use it on the team write up last week.

Didn't you only have to go 5 yards in 3 downs in those days?

No it was 4 downs for 10 yards by that time, but just 2-4 years before it was 3 downs for five yards.
Also a strategy at the time was to kick early, anyone could recover a punt (ie, it was a free ball).
College football changed more between the years of 1905 and 1914, than it has since that time.
Any football records before 1906 should be counted as American rugby, 1906 is when you get the farward pass that made football what it is today.

I disagree - I think the the line of scrimmage, the down, is what made football into not-Rugby at least. that was the fundamental change, the idea that one team would have undisputed possession of the ball. It was certainly not modern football until the forward pass became leagl - but it was definitely not rugby starting in 1882 with the invention of the down.
I believe the biggest change since 1914 is the 2 point conversion, introduced I think to start the 1958 season. (LSU's champ year)
It would be interesting to see an exhibition game played under an older set of rules.

Yes the 2 point conversion rule of 1958 added a missing element, that has made the game more enjoyable.
OT has had a bad and good effect, the bad is that scoring in OT is to easy and the good is you do end a game with a winner.
The down effect of the game Camp added was to give a distance to go far, but even at 5 yards it was hard to make; which is why you saw the advent of the flying wedge.
With the down being added in newspapers of the time called the game American rugby or American foot-ball (which is later football).
Doing research on LSU I get to see how the words change like to-day became today, teams nicknames are different, LSU was known as the Pelicans, Tigers, Arkansas was the Cardinals, Auburn of corsue was the Plainsmen, Miss. St. the Blacksmiths, etc.
I forgot to tell you that in those days freshman or eligible, its not until 1910-14 that all athletic assocations ban them, that is the dumbest rule ever in college sports history.
