What do vine borers eat when squash isn't around? I haven't had any trouble with them before. Fingers crossed that I don't start.

I have no idea. I’ve never seen one in my life until last year when I planted pumpkins for the first time. My seedlings were only about 3” tall and they found them.

I had read that if you have problems with them then you should take a year off from planting squash. I guess the idea is that if you don’t grow squash for the moths to lay eggs in, then you’ll have no overwintering pupae. Thus eliminating, or at least reducing, the problem the next year. Well I had never grown any type of squash before and they just magically appeared the first time I tried. So I don’t think that would work for me.

ETA: Looks like the Captain Jack got a little bigger since this morning. Might have something to carve for Halloween!

And the a couple of the Sugar Pies are starting to turn orange!
