re: Why do people call them "street tacos"?

because the authentic "street taco" is different from the gringo commercialized, fast-food restaurant version. Hundreds of years ago (and still today), street vendors in Mexico sold smaller tacos that were made with 4-5" corn tortillas. They were basically an inexpensive snack and laborers also ate them for lunch. They were designed to be held in one hand and eaten quickly, 2-3 bites.
the taco you're familiar and most people make at home on shells is NOT the same
taquerias and food trucks serving authentic Mexican food serve this as street tacos

This is exactly the point I'm making. The term "street tacos" is dumb. They're just "tacos". Call them tacos. Otherwise you look like a rube that's never had anything other than Taco Bell or Margs at some chain based in Columbus Ohio.

Yep. There are plenty taco trucks in Houston that sell street tacos. And they aren't fancy taco trucks. They are little trailers they pull or kind of junky trucks. But they are good!
