quote:

It’s not supposed to be a political term.

That was then. This is now.

quote:

It’s historically been reserved for like family members and partners doing something awful and then telling you it never happened, forcing you to mistrust your own sanity.

Yes. But now it has an expanded definition.

quote:

When politicians and media figures lie, they are just lying and trying to mislead you.

No, this new type of political/cultural lying is different. At least with the old lying there was a backstop of reality that the majority understood and relied upon. The standards of “common sense” and “reasonable person” have been intentionally corrupted and nullified by the “queering” or “anti-normativity” of the wokists.

Go read 1984 again. It’s one thing to lie, it’s another thing to make you believe that war is peace, weakness is strength, men can be women, 2+2 can equal 5, etcetera.

I largely agree. Particularly about the evolution of the term. There isn’t anyone qualified to tell you which language and symbols are suppose to be used unless you are agreeing on specific conventions for use

Language evolves and it’s evolution enhances communication. It allows people that want to join conversations to express themselves without having to wade through lots of potentially boring or non related texts. Sometimes words and phrases lose power with overuse (eg “rent free”), and sometimes people will use newer words to exclude from the conversation. Indeed, there is one poster who just makes up his own abbreviations

Obviously some conversations require more precision. A psychologist probably couldn’t meaningfully use a diagnosis of “gaslit” to help advance treatment. Nevertheless, it works fine here

As for differences today, I do think Bill Clinton and his political progency were users of these tactics at the same degree as today. We just didn’t have a term for it then. We had to settle for “Slick Willy”. If we had the modern “gaslighting” in our Mr vocabulary, we could have discussed it better

This is the death of the monoculture not gaslighting. When Walter Cronkite gave the days news in 30 minutes, people could bar their disagreements off a shared set of “facts” even if those facts were often lies or at least misleading. The internet broke that. We’re all in our own bubbles and when we speak to someone outside our bubbles they sound insane, and we sound insane to them, because no one is talking about the same set of facts. It’s made filling the public with lord and misinformation easier than ever, but it’s still not gaslighting. Most of us spend all day online reading and talking to people who mostly agree with us. We aren’t in danger of doubting our own sanity. If anything we are more likely to believe that everyone else is insane
