Bama hasn't improved their academic rankings, just their perception. They do a good job of using athletics as an advertisement and they have invested heavily in their campus. The two big "innovations" that Bama made in admissions are that they employ regional recruiters who live in various parts of the country (they were the first public to embrace this) and they give automatic scholarships to out of state students based on high ACT and GPA. The recruiters can point to the newer campus, a huge Greek scene, and then assure the smart kids that they'll get a scholarship.
The result is that their school is now 70% out of state students. I'm not sure that is LSU's goal.
