what was his security supposed to do?

Not slap her. That's extremely unprofessional. OTOH it's par for the course for a lot of "security." There are professionals with training and usually military/LE experience and then there are borderline thugs. Which category his security falls into is an exercise left to the reader.

Brittany may have gotten too close and assumed she's more of an A lister than she is at this point, but they didn't handle it right.

On one hand, it appears he did not slap her, on the other hand there is an interesting escalation here

9:10 AM PT -- Our law enforcement sources tell us the cops who responded to ARIA reviewed security camera footage showing Smith push Britney's hand away ... and then her hand, not Smith's, struck her face. Cops did not address the velocity of the force of the swing.

9:46 AM PT -- We just received contrary information about the police investigation from a source high up in the Metro PD. Our source says this is indeed a criminal investigation and they are taking the incident "as serious as a heart attack." The source adds the case will "likely" be referred to the D.A., although that does not mean criminal charges will be filed.
