as little as possible. There is no rule. It all depends on where you need to spend your money.
You can afford a lot of house if you want to stay home and eat at home all the time. If you want to eat out all the time and travel tons, you wont be able to afford as much house. Same issue with cars.

I definitely spend a lot of time at my house. I did when I lived in a little, shitty house and I do now that I live in a giant, not-so-shitty house.
Hell, my house has almost everything I need.
You're absolutely right, though. If you eat out and travel a lot, you should probably be in a small apartment.
