The anti-discrimination "One Love" captain's armband banned at the men's World Cup in Qatar will be worn in an amended version at the Women's World Cup next month, although FIFA opted out entirely of the rainbow that is known as a symbol for LBGTQ+ pride.

FIFA unveiled eight armbands on Friday that captains of the 32 teams can choose to wear in Australia and New Zealand during the tournament, which runs July 20-Aug. 20.

quote:

The eight themes chosen by FIFA and the 32 nations are:

Unite for Inclusion -- in partnership with UN Human Rights
Unite for Indigenous Peoples -- in partnership with UN Human Rights
Unite for Gender Equality -- in partnership with UN Women
Unite for Peace -- in partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency
Unite for Education for All -- in partnership with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
Unite for Zero Hunger -- in partnership with the UN World Food Programme
Unite for Ending Violence Against Women -- in partnership with UN Women
Football is Joy, Peace, Love, Hope & Passion -- in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO)

quote:

This "Unite for Inclusion" option chosen is heart-shaped and multicolored but not quite the rainbow the Germany team wanted to use at the tournament, where a number of gay players will be among more than 700 selected on team rosters.

Fifa is cleverly trying to find a way to disassociate LGBTQ+ influence from football which has become a huge problem in recent years and prevents the game from growing in the american, china and non western markets.

think it’s more because our players suck. Not the gay suck but the other one.

They don't. Our women are the best in the world and our men are a top 16 program on the rise. This stance by FIFA is more about global perception of soccer. Of course MLS might be the wokest sporting organization in the world, so we will see if they react.

perception is key though. LGBTQ stuff is extremely polarizing in america and thus it will be harder to get more people to play/embrace it due to the stigma.

gays have latched onto it as its the world's most watched sport, and they crave attention. this stuff should've been routed out from the game ages ago.

We played a damned good game against Netherlands in our round of 16 loss. Believe we had more shots on goal and possession, unfortunately we gave them two really good opportunities they took advantage of early in the game where as we just couldn't get our shots past the keeper. MUCH better performance from our 2014 loss to Belgium where they vastly outplayed us. It took a record breaking performance from Tim Howard to get us into extra time.

There will be backlash from some teams who will claim that the options “aren’t gay enough.”

Sort of seems more important than uniting for an LBGTQ+ person to get their own TV show.

I can see multiple reasons for the perception:

1) The recent failure to even make the World Cup.

2) The contrast in results compared to the USWNT.

3) MLS is an inferior league.

4) Losing is part of our identity. Similar to the old Curse of the Bambino and Curse of the Billy Goat, or Dem Bums.

This is primarily because the European nations did not start funding womens sports in a major fashion until long after the United States did.

They will catch up.

Todd Graves has a case for copyright infringement.

Unless they make the armband larger every year.
