There was nothing at all to support that it belonged to anyone. No formal documentation of the land. No formal documentation of its ownership. No formal government to stand up and declare it. Certainly no ability to defend it.

When your civilization is at least a century or two behind other civilizations, you really don't have a complaint.

A century or two? More like a couple of millennia behind other civilizations. They didn't have the wheel and they had few domesticated animals. Their arrival in the New World helped with the extinction of the megafauna in the Americas.

Read the book, "Empire of the Summer Moon" to see how noble some of the native Americans were. The Comanches made the Apaches quit and seek help from the Spanish. The ravaged the Southwest and displaced numerous tribes.
