Thanks for the clarification, but, there are many many Protestants who preach, teach and believe exactly what Hislop wrote.
Wiki has a decent article about the Whore of Babylon in the Book of Revelation. From the earliest days and commentators of Christianity, they seemed to agree that the Whore of Babylon was the Roman Empire. That makes sense because the Roman Empire was putting Christians to death for centuries.
I suppose that the whore of Babylon could be apostate Christianity, but, back when the Roman Empire was still around, most commentators believed that the reference was to Rome's Empire and government.
