Why didn't you or someone check out the carburetor to verify that's all it was? Pretty easy to do.
Or use some ether in it to see if the engine would fire?
I am a horrible mechanic but I know enough to check a few things before buying a PoS.

Yeah first thing your friend should have checked was the carb and then when it looked great and still did not start deal off. Unless the guy wants to make an even better deal or agree that if it cannot get fixed for “said amount” he will give you your money back.
