Late 40s. Raised in Tx. Heard of the holiday as a kid, but my family and extended never celebrated it.

I knew some blacks (not from TX) who felt we should be angry our ancestors were freed 2yrs too late rather than celebrate it.

I knew of Opal Lee pushing to make it a holiday. I never thought it would happen since it’s really a TX holiday. But with the recent events, the perfect storm was there and bam, it’s a federal holiday.
I didn’t celebrate it this year, but I don’t feel need to rip on those who did. Just like I don’t care for President’s Day and Columbus Day.

Do you believe any of that's accurate? That they were "freed later"?

Did these friends think that the slaves in Mississippi were magically freed when Lincoln issued an EO, to some greater extent than slaves in Texas?
