You literally cannot have any level legitimate discussion about this unless one has a working knowledge of how the mass of documents in question come to be part of that mass of documents. It most definitely is not a matter of the President or his staff slipping into this file room and that storage room and targeting specific documents to leave the WH with. That’s a preposterous concept on its face and it should not take any more than standard common sense to mentally upload.
The President doesn’t just have open access to top secret documents residing within the Pentagon and such. The records that were at MAL were for any number of thousands of legit reasons directed to the Office of the President. Think of what all the President is involved in. Everything. Thus, obviously, as with any other office setting, there are endless documents and records and files etc. Those are retained, maintained, stored, protected, etc solely by the Office of the President particularly during the President’s active tenure.
If and when that President must leave office, they don’t simply leave all that information behind for someone else to deal with. That outgoing President (his people) pack it all, secure it and dedicate an acceptable site in which to securely store AND GO THROUGH that massive amount of information and documentation to make their rightful determinations of personal (keepers) or Presidential (to the Archives) and so on. And that massive amount of information to go through does and always will include “classified” and “top secret” records, yes even national defense, military and intelligence records that were intended for the President’s office to begin with. Even the left and DOJ understand and acknowledge that the President will always have to “take” classified information with him from the WH.
Tl;dr ; don’t give a damn nohow
