We once took the long-cut through historic Washington. Toured the old buildings, learned what life was like there during the Civil War era, chatted with the blacksmith in the shop where the Bowie knife may have been first made, and had a decent lunch.

Texarkana has Tacos Mi Pueblo, open Saturday and Sunday only. It’s a hole in the wall taco place run by an army of Mexicans, and they do a hella business. Always get the carnitas sopes and top with some of the green sauce that is on the tables. Don’t park at the Mexi grocery store next door, or the pissed off lady who runs it will rip your arse in Spanish.

Albert Pike has some nice, easy hiking with waterfalls and creek swimming. Just don't go when flash floods are a possibility.
