Hanover was going to throw home when all of a sudden he heard a voice yelling '2-2-2-2,'" Mainieri said. "It was their first base coach yelling that. There's no rule against it in the rule book, but there's an unwritten rules in the game of baseball.

Is this much different than coaches in the dugout and the first base coach pointing to foul territory behind first base to trick the runner into thinking he can get to second on an overthrow?

Edit: Sorry -- not thinking. First base coach on same team.

You do know the first base coach and baserunner are on the same team, right? Why would a first base coach be trying to trick his own runner into wrongly thinking he could go to second on an overthrow?

Yes, because it’s a base runners job to see the ball rolling away before they move to the next base. On a relay throw the fielder can not turn and look at home before throwing the ball. You will never get anyone out like that. A relay man must trust his team mates behind him to verbally let him know whether he is relaying the ball hime or cutting the throw and turning to another base.

It’s the same as a defensive player in footballl barking out “hut”, or whatever, to try and make the offensive players false start.
