I’m always floored by people making 200k/year yet they have a mortgage and car payments.

Depends on how long they have been making this kind of money. Also, what if they have a house mortgaged at 2.5%. Maybe they aren't in a hurry to pay it off.

You are easily floored. There are many rationale, easy to think of examples for why someone making $200K would have at least a mortgage and potential car payments.

Recently started making higher income
Student loan payoff
