North of woodville and of course it’s rained everywhere but our plots. Even other parts of our place.

I keep putting off planting mine at home.
Where do you hunt north of town? I hunt a good bit off Sam Leake Rd

We are off 563 by buffalo
I could only plant today and the forecast shows a chance every day this week.
I hate the apple weather app though. And I hate them even more since they bought and dismantled DarkSky

2.24 acres of summer mix from Bluff Farms in the center and did the outside parts of the field with brown top millet.
1.2 acres of 20lbs Clay Peas and 30 lbs browntop millet
Disced, harrowed smooth, burned with Glyphosate last week.
Did soil tests a few months ago and said to add lime and nitrogen
Did one ton of lime in all my fields (10 tons total) about three weeks ago
Did the right amount of fertilizer
I’m trying so hard to get this right and move to no till buffalo method using the drill, Crimper, and saving on fertilizer
Trying to move away from corn and protein

Did alyce clover and clay peas last weekend, got the first drop of rain yesterday evening but from cams looks like dirt dried out by noon. Hoping those daily afternoon showers kick in soon.

It would be nice to get one big shower a little after dark

Planted joint vetch and alyce clover first of May (with a few cowpeas on the way into the plot). Deer and rabbits have been appreciative so far. This is behind the house in Ponchatoula...still haven't made it up to the camp yet. We're not far from ya, off Old 61

Well, zero rain last night and now the forecast has zero rain chances after this afternoon.
This always happens
Part of the reason I’m going to no-till, buffalo release method

This is our 3rd year on the drill. Still a bit of a learning curve to get it right. We were planting the joint vetch(summer), and clover(fall) too deep with the drill. Germination was spotty. Adjusted the drill to basically be controlled broadcasting. We’ll see what happens.

I tried to plant summer plots once. And this is why I won’t do it again. I switched to mineral sites for the summer and food plots for the fall/winter. My thoughts are that there’s plenty for deer to eat in the spring and summer.
ETA: got some pretty good bone growth so far.

What drill and how deep were you going?
Did you use herbicide first?

I agree. The woodville area is chock full of browse right now. We are logging about 300 acres so there will be tons more.
I’m just trying to add protein to their diet year round.

After keeping a few protein feeders going feb-oct two years in a row, I generally agree which is why I’m not doing it anymore. That said, the deer absolutely destroyed those feeders in two instances; post season when it’s still cold and nothing has greened up, and in late summer when it hasn’t rained in over a week. If it rained they let the protein sit, if the browse dried out they would empty a 350lb feeder in days. For post season I made sure to hit the winter plots with fertilizer before leaving, and cams showed they used them. My goal now is just to have something drought tolerant on the ground for those July and August dry spells, and keep body weight consistent.

I’m with you. Jan-Feb and August are touch. I’d say my research found that August is most critical for mother doe and fawns.
And I’m trying to get my soil ready for when CWD outlaws feeding.
Well it looks like my rain dance had the opposite effect. No rain in sight. FML

How are you trying to do this? Buying bagged seed or making your own mix? Are you using a consultant? If you aren’t using a consultant, how did you decide on what soil samples to use?
I’m about to put 50 acres into this program this fall. Possible up to 200 acres in it in the next 5 years or so.

My seed and site selection was done last summer by a well known wildlife biologist. I researched soil health and Ray Archuleta and Grant Woods from the GrowingDeertv YouTube channel.
I did the soil samples and took them to Mrs Ann at the MS State Extension office in woodville. Then told her what we were doing and she funnels my questions to the wildlife department, soil department and forestry department at MSU. Listen to Deer University podcast if you ever get a chance. I’m also reading a whitetail biology book.
Then I talked to my co-op and they pointed me in the right direction for fertilizer and seed. B&H is good too. But I’m going to use greencover.com seeds when the cover crop is done.
Last phase is to actually buy the Crimper and drill. I’ve done a lot of research and unfortunately the only one that’s fool proof and heavy enough is the Genesis and it’s like 12k
Anyway, everyone around woodville looks at me like I’ve got two heads when I explain this method of feeding
I hope I’m wrong but everyone putting out four tons of protein a year is about to be racing to get their soil right when CWD gets here.
Anyway, if done right I can produce up to 6k lbs per acre of food a year. That’s 60k on my property now. I’ll have more food plots or feeding plots next year when the logging is done.
If I had started this method last year, I wouldn’t be praying for rain right now either.
If you’d like to talk about it, give me a call three three seven three seven zero eight nine five nine. Maybe if you’re close enough we can split the drill/Crimper cost

The Genesis looks like a toy compared to the Great Plains, Landpride. Tons of discussions about them both on habitat-forum.com.
