Right but that's also subjective. Given how common 'being disowned' by their families is in that community, I'm guessing that we can make some conclusions on whether they were treated decently.

You need to go out and talk to people more. Or read about the topic just to get some different perspectives. Because how you would handle it isn't the same as how most people did handle it.

The question is who is doing the disowning? Again, why does them being estranged from their families necessarily have to mean they were not treated well by their families? Could the inverse not also be true?

People have a tendency of stretching the truth to gain sympathy points from others for their perceived plight as well.
