Please don't tell me that 'prechate' was meant to be appreciate...
Anyhow, I'll tell ya how to do it via photoshop and you can translate it into gimp-speak but you basically make the text on a new layer, rasterize that text layer and make it's opacity however high you want (I suggest 60%). Best of luck.
