Yes, they could go to 4 divisions, but there is no provision that would allow them to have a 4 team playoff to decide the conference champion.

So? You don't have to have a 4 team playoff just like you don't have to have a CG in a single division.

The only real difference is the single division is a true cream rises to the top model with only one winner. With the 4 division model there are at least 4 winners of something and that has value in a system that has so little parity.

Anyway, my point wasn't to argue for one over the other, but to suggest you shouldn't self constrain your thinking.
