I get your point but this is an oversimplification. Comfort matters to some and nicer, newer vehicle have more of those comforts. With that said, there are way too many luxury vehicles on the road for the number of people that can responsibly afford them. Simply put, there aren’t that many people who can safely afford $700 monthly notes yet that’s what a $40K loan looks like even at low interest rates for 5 years.
Good on the OP for being financially responsible with vehicles.

Wife and I haven’t had a car payment for 6 years. Both cars have right around 100k miles. Should be good for another 10-15 years
