Ive never changed oil and not done the filter at the same time. I mean im literally laying right there underneath it. Why not change it while im there?

Yeah it’s cheap and easy so might as well change it.

Believe it or not, new oil cleans up quite a bit when running through your oil filter. A seasoned filter will filter better than a new one.
Scientifically, an oil filter filters better and better until the exact moment it hits the bypass pressure.
A lot of extreme high rev applications rec changing the filter every other time for that very reason.
