Surely there is a better reason to pump a fake image inside the helmet than making sure the camera lens gets cleaned

They think it is safe and take off their helmet, leading to their death while everyone inside is watching. Nichols was about to remove her helmet before she realized the image was fake. This led to her keeping the helmet on and making it over the ridge.

The fake images were to motivate them to clean to show everyone it was safe. They mentioned others were certain they wouldn’t clean before going out. Holston was the first to take his helmet off. At that moment he saw his wife’s body and crawled to her to die. The faulty tape was the reason they all died.

I agree with the quoted post that a better reason is required to explain the need for the cleaning. Creating the hologram seems like an unnecessarily high risk. You’ve provided all the motivation for a new rebellion.

That doesn’t make sense either. The last episode clearly implied that it was inferior tape that was killing them. Nichols was able to go over the edge because her friends switched the tape not because she kept her helmet on

Again though if going outside is considered a death sentence then why project a fake image in the helmet. Kind of cruel to sentence someone to death only to trick them into thinking they’re gonna live because it’s so beautiful outside. Just kidding, enjoy getting gassed.
