Cottonmouths are one of the most docile snakes around. Most will just sit there when you approach, some will flee. Occasionally they’ll open their mouth and give you a gaping display, but even those don’t usually strike. They never chase you. I catch them in a regular basis, and even when catching them most don’t attempt to strike. Caught this little fella last week…

Along with this one…

Got this one in the Everglades last month…

Even this canebrake rattler didn’t strike a single time.

Snakes are so harmless and misunderstood.

That is bs, I can't tell you how many mocassins I've had to blow away with a 20 gauge while squirrel/deer hunting because they will come toward you. One was trailing behind my little brother one time and we didn't see it until it was a good 1-2 feet behind. Am I saying all cottonmouths will do that? Of course not, but there are some that will get aggressive.

Agreed for most species but calling all snakes harmless is bullshite. A close family friend's 9 year old daughter was bit on the ankle by a rattlesnake just as she stepped out of the back door. She had to get like 14 vials of antivenom and was in the hospital for weeks. I also had a big rattler hit the back of my boot walking through a coastal field, those fricks hit hard. In general they don't bother me and get a pass but any venomous ones around the house die, unless it's a coral snake, I have relocated a few of those.
