It makes me wonder if DS9 even gets made if Roddenberry had been alive and in creative control. He preferred his Star Trek to be a "humanity at its best" - DS9, while an amazing show, was definitely not that.

No, because they would have cancelled TNG before the fourth season if Roddenberry stayed in charge of that show.
